Warm-up #1: Linear Playing

Learning how to move your fingers in different patterns will help you to quickly learn different riffs and melodies. This Warm-up uses the finger pattern 1-3-2-4, helping you to get comfortable with skipping fingers on the same string.

Warm-up #2: Linear Playing

This Linear Playing Warm-up reverses the pattern of the last one, now using the finger pattern 4-2-3-1. Play along with this Warm-up exercise to increase the coordination between your picking and fretting hands.

Scale: Minor Scale (1 octave)

The minor scale is often considered the opposite of the major scale, and it has a distinctly different sound. This lesson will introduce you to the minor scale, with a simple 1-octave scale shape that is perfect for any new guitarist.

Chord: Open E5 Chord (3 note)

Power chords don't have to contain just 2 notes! The open E5 chord can be played as a 3-note chord, by simply adding another finger. This lesson shows you how, and includes a Practice Song so you can show off your new chord!

Chord: Open A5 Chord (3 note)

Like the open E5 chord, the open A5 chord can also be played as a 3-note chord. Thousands of songs will have you switch between E5 and A5, so we've included a Practice Song with these power chords to help with your chord switching!

Technique: Sustaining Notes

In music, rhythm is just as important as pitch, so you will need to know how long to hold each note. When a note is held long, it is called sustaining the note. This lesson covers how to sustain open strings and fretted notes, and how to recognize rests in music and guitar TAB.
